The Russian Bazaar, also known as Gulistan, is one of the largest and oldest covered markets in Turkmenistan, located in the city center. Built between 1972 and 1982, it was designed by Russian architect Vladimir Visotin as part of the Ashgabat Reconstruction Program. The structure, showcasing Soviet Modernism, features a striking abstract sculpture by Turkmen sculptor Klych Yarmamedov. Despite the growth of new malls in Ashgabat, this market remains popular with locals, tourists, and foreign delegations due to its vast array of goods, shops, and eateries. In 2001, the Turkish company Ekol renovated the bazaar, updating shops and food stalls and adding white marble to the complex. A fire in the clothing section occurred in 2007.Â
